![]() ![]() I feel like a bit of a geek on this, but I find the whole idea of sweeps pretty horrible and invasive so wanted a good look at the evidence before I decide. You should be offered a membrane sweep at your 40 week and 41 week antenatal appointments. A membrane sweep can be uncomfortable and can cause some light bleeding, but it also makes it more likely that you will go into labour naturally. It's not a huge effect though - the Cochrane review states that 8 women would need to be given sweeps in order to prevent one induction. The point of it is to separate the sac surrounding your baby from the cervix and trigger natural labour. However, repeating the sweep after term does seem to reduce the chance of going past 41 weeks. Service providers ensure that processes are in place to discuss the option of vaginal examination for membrane sweeping with pregnant women at antenatal appointments after 39 weeks of pregnancy. In fact, the largest study had women given a sweep at 39 weeks and more women in the control group (no sweep) than the sweep group had gone into labour by one week later. What the quality statement means for different audiences. As far as I can see, early sweeps don't usually have much immediate effect and aren't recommended routinely in low risk pregnancies. You can see a review of the studies of the effectiveness of sweeps if you Google Cochrane review membrane sweeps. No study has compared once-only membrane sweeping with multiple (weekly) membrane sweeping beginning at 39 weeks’ gestational age. Ended up delivering the next morning at 2:54 am. The membranes hold the amniotic fluid (water) that protects your baby and gives your baby room to move around. The membranes, also called the amniotic sac or bag of water, surround your baby in your uterus (womb) during pregnancy. I cramped all day and went for a 1hr+ walk after work, when I got home from walk I started contracting at 6:30 pm. Membrane sweeping is a method used to help your body go into labor. I was looking into this as I've been offered a sweep at 38+6 (Thursday), although I'm in a different situation because I'm aiming for VBAC but for medical reasons will need to deliver by due date. I got a sweep at 38+4 at 9:40 am I was 1.5cm, 50 effaced, soft and anterior.
